“A breath that lasts an undefined span of time, taken on the thin line between the sea and the air. An outpouring of anger and bitterness, of longing and, finally, of peace.”
Līmen | Samìa | Līmen (2024). An electronic and orchestral piece commissioned by Ravenna Festival, inspired by the story of Samia Yusuf Omar.
World premiere conducted by Riccardo Muti and performed by Orchestra Cherubini in Ravenna and Lampedusa in 2024. Published by SZ Sugar. Orchestrated by Claudio Cavallin.
Līmen | Samìa | Līmen was born quickly, at the end of the compositional process for the stage production of Non Dirmi Che Hai Paura. The piece arrived as if it was already somewhere in my mind, something that only happened to me rarely. For months I reflected on Samia’s story, and on the lives of those who, like her, undertake the terrifying journey of leaving their homes in search of a new life beyond borders. I kept wondering what Samia’s final moments might have been like, when she confronted an invisible gates that stands in the middle of the mediterranea sea.For me, Līmen is precisely that: a place of transition, a threshold which, once crossed, marks an irreversible shift.
